Care for your Caravan - Winter maintenance tips
Servicing
Consider having your annual service in the winter. Workshops tend to be less busy and more offers may be available. Before storing your caravan, a damp check could find any potential high-risk areas for early rectification that if left, may cause expensive damage over winter.
Moisture Traps
If you caravan is shut up for long periods air-bound water molecules may generate inside. Moisture traps positioned in washroom and main living areas will help to alleviate this.
Tyre Care
A caravan left for several months may develop flat spots and this can encourage cracking of the tyres. You can help to avoid this by either raising off the ground, using winter wheels (which aids security) or using tyre savers. If wheels are left on your caravan, a wheel cover can help protect from harmful rays.
Upholstery
Remove as much as possible and store at home in a warm dry area. Any furnishings left in your caravan, store end on and in the centre of the walkway allowing for air circulation.
Leisure Battery
A leisure battery must be charged at least every 5-6 weeks. If you remove your battery from your caravan, store it in a dry place and do not keep on a concrete floor as this can drain the charge from it. Please remember that leisure batteries require a higher amperage charge than normal car batteries so please ensure that the charger you are using is adequate for the battery size.
Blinds
Never leave blinds in the down position for long periods. This can result in the tension failure and expensive repair or replacement plus sunlight against reflective blinds can damage windows. If you need to close off the caravan, drawn curtains are better but open curtains allow the caravan to air better.
Water Systems
All taps should be left in the open position and where possible spouts removed to help prevent frost damage to them. Shower hoses should be extended to the highest position to allow drainage.
Disconnect and shake out water from your pump and store in a dry warm place.
Hot and cold water systems should be drained, check with your caravan hand book for the drain points to your caravan's water heater.
With the TRUMA ULTRASTORE, disconnect pump and switch off power. Ensure all taps are open and any filters drained. Open drain valve.
With the CARVER CASCADE, unscrew the drain plug which is located bottom corner of flue cowl and where possible release pressure valve (this is a cam screw) located top corner flue cowl (later models only). Activate cold water drain plug (if fitted). Open all taps and drain/remove filter. If a cascade MK2 filter is fitted, after cleaning housing aperture, you can remove cap from filter and replace cap loosely in housing to eliminate bugs crawling inside.
Ensure that all waste water pipes are fully drained and dust caps or covers replaced to stop insects crawling inside.
External Electrics
Check that all light lenses are correctly fastened and sealed and that there are no cracks in lenses. Spray plug pins with anti-corrosion fluid and if possible cover.
Cover
A caravan cover is a low cost item that can save you a lot of time and expense at the start of the new season. Using a caravan cover will protect your caravan from all the weather extremes and keep your caravan fresh for the next time that you use it. A cover also increases security.
Security
Wherever you store your caravan, approved security products should be used at all times.
